St. Louis Rams Strategy and Personnel 2008-08-06
The team experienced an uncomfortable situation July 28 when they were assigned tackle Julius Wilson on waivers from Miami. Wilson was waived by the Dolphins two days before. That meant the Rams had to release a player, so a golf cart was dispatched to retrieve rookie tackle Stephen Sene, who was already on the field getting ready for practice. Sene left the field on the cart after being told he had been cut.

It's not known why Sene wasn't told earlier since no other team could have been awarded Wilson (the Cardinals also put in a claim). That's because claims are awarded in this year's draft order, which means the Rams have second priority to any player waived. In this case, they were first because Miami is usually first, but they were the team that waived Wilson.

--RB Steven Jackson is being fined $15,000 a day after not reporting for training camp. As of Sunday, Jackson had missed nine days and 13 practices.

--RG Mark Setterstrom is sidelined by a knee injury after missing 13 games last season because of ACL surgery.

--LB Vince Hall, who was signed as an undrafted free agent after injuring his knee in Virginia Tech's bowl game, was waived injured Aug. 2 because of a hamstring injury. He will end up on injured reserve.

--WR Donnie Avery suffered a small crack in his pelvic bone July 28, but is expected back on the practice field this week.

--LB Quinton Culberson is trying to stake a claim to the starting job on the strong side with Chris Draft sidelined by a back injury.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Chris Draft vs. Quinton Culberson for strong-side linebacker -- Draft was the presumptive starter when camp opened, but a back injury he suffered led the way for Culberson to get numerous snaps and he is taking advantage of it.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Antonio Pittman vs. Brian Leonard for backup running back. Both have played significantly with the first unit with Steven Jackson not at training camp ... Numerous players for the No. 3 receiver job. Rookie Donnie Avery is out with an injury, but Dante Hall, Keenan Burton and Derek Stanley have made impacts in the first nine days of practice.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LB Quinton Culberson -- With Chris Draft sidelined with a back injury, Culberson has been working with the first unit at strong-side (SAM) linebacker. "He's doing a great job," coach Scott Linehan said. "I'm not surprised; but, I'm really glad we played him at the end of the year like we were able to. It just kind of happened because of injury, but he's had a taste of it and played very well for us on special teams. And now, he's just one of those guys that's always around the ball. Everybody around our place knows he made a big impact this time of year for our football team as far as making the team. And now he's moving into potentially being our starting SAM. Not discounting what Chris Draft is going to do for us because he's been hobbled by a bad back, but Quinton is taking advantage of the opportunities." Culberson tweaked an ankle in Saturday's scrimmage, but it's not believed o be serious.

ROOKIE REPORT: DE Chris Long looked good in an Aug. 2 scrimmage, and has been improving on a daily basis. ... OL John Greco was getting reps at right guard with Mark Setterstrom out with a knee injury. ... LBs Chris Chamberlain and David Vobora, both seventh-round picks, have been solid in camp. Undrafted free agent Marc Magro has also made his presence felt.

INJURY REPORT: Rookie CB Justin King (tight hamstring) was added to the injury list Aug. 1 because of a tight hamstring. ... CB Tye Hill (quad) and WR Drew Bennett (knee) returned to practice the day before after missing two days. Returning Aug. 1 were CB David Macklin (hamstring), C Brett Romberg (hand) and WR Marques Hagans (hamstring). ... RG Mark Setterstrom left practice July 29 with what was described as numbness in his leg. The next day it was termed a muscle injury in the area of the knee ... WR Donnie Avery is out with a cracked pelvic bone. Said coach Scott Linehan, "It's an unusual injury, but not a serious injury. So, from what I have been told, this could be a few days, could be a week, probably not more than two weeks. But he'll be able to run and train and I think it's more of a pain tolerance type thing." ... TE Anthony Becht and S Oshiomogho Atogwe are out with hamstring injuries. ... NT Josh Thompson (foot) and LB Vince Hall (hamstring) were waived injured. ... DE Victor Adeyanju underwent surgery July 28 to repair a broken middle finger. Said Linehan, "Once that wound starts to heal up and feel comfortable, then we'll put a club on it and we'll give him limited work. In two weeks, I'm saying he's taking a lot of snaps. Four weeks, he's probably going to have a modified 'something' on his hand so he can use his hand more. By the opener, we're hoping that there's not much on there other than just protecting where that surgery was."
