St. Louis Rams Notes, Quotes 2008-12-30
--Monday, general manager Billy Devaney began asking permission to speak with assistant coaches about the team's head coaching job. The Rams have been granted permission to talk with Packers assistant head coach and linebackers coach Winston Moss.

Ironically, the former NFL player worked as a linebackers coach in New Orleans under Jim Haslett.

--Having rookie John Greco at left guard for Sunday's game against Atlanta was expected. However, having Adam Goldberg at right guard was not.

Usual left guard Jacob Bell was inactive because of a hamstring injury. Right guard Richie Incognito, who missed practice on Friday because of the stomach flu, made the trip, but was also inactive.

Said Haslett after the game, "He was sick this morning. I decided that (not to play him)." Incognito was getting an IV in the locker room before the game and saying he didn't feel well. At that point, Haslett told the doctor to take the IV out and had Incognito get changed into street clothes.

For Goldberg, it was his seventh start of the season at his fourth different position. Goldberg also started two games this year at left tackle, left guard and right tackle.

He said, "That's my job if I'm going to be the swing man, the sixth man then that's my job to come in and play at a level that facilitates our offense being successful and moving the ball. I was proud of our unit's performance today."

--RB Steven Jackson rushed for 161 yards and totaled 215 yards from scrimmage in the loss to the Falcons. It illustrated just how valuable Jackson is to the offense. Jackson, who played in 12 games, led NFL running backs in average scrimmage yards per game with 118.4

The team's worst stretch under Haslett came with Jackson on the sideline. After a close loss to New England, the Rams were outscored 143-35 in four losses. After Jackson returned, four of five losses were by a combined total of 12 points.

Said Haslett, "I thought Steven was outstanding. That was healthy Steven. With him healthy, that's probably what you can get every game. I thought he was into it. I thought the line did a great job for him.

"Him coming back in full tilt the last couple games you can see where your football team's not far away from the teams that we just lost to. Atlanta just won 11 games; Miami won 11 games doing the things that I believe in and building around their running game and playing pretty good defense, so it showed it can be done. I think it shows you what one guy can mean to your football team."

--Haslett on how the season played out: "I'm disappointed. I thought that we had a chance to win the last four games. I think this team needs to learn how to win. That is one thing that needs to be accomplished in the offseason. I don't think you have to worry about effort. You have to have a team (as the coach) in the offseason and in training camp to accomplish winning."
