St. Louis Rams Notes, Quotes 2008-08-28
--The competition between QBs Brock Berlin and Bruce Gradkowski is going down to the wire. Both are expected to play significantly in the final preseason game Thursday against Kansas City.

"This is a big game for them," coach Scott Linehan acknowledged. "Even before Bruce got here and for Brock, the whole offseason and the whole thing, it's been important for our No. 3 quarterback position and the progress from that position. We've felt very good about both of their progress and I think the competition has really raised

their level of play."

--RB Steven Jackson, who reported to the team Aug. 21 after

missing 27 days of training camp, is not expected to play in the preseason finale against the Chiefs.

Jackson did extra work beyond practice in an attempt to get him as ready as possible for the season opener.

"He's had really a hard, hard four or five days," Linehan said. "We've put him through a lot of work, mentally and physically and conditioning which he expected and was very willing to do certainly. I'm pleased with where he's at. He was really sharp today (Wednesday) and I was happy to see that because you always worry about having a

little rust on you if you haven't been out there in a while."

--Rookie WRs Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton both stood out in the

third preseason game. It was Avery's first game action after missing two weeks of practice because of a cracked pelvic bone.

"He looked kind of nervous on a couple of plays," Linehan said of Avery. "The bright spot was he just kept playing. He got better as he continued to play in the game and didn't let himself get down. He's very, very hard on himself, which is a great trait of his. In fact, I think I told everybody that was the one negative they said about him. The guy is sometimes is a little hard on himself and maybe works too hard, puts too much time in the weight room.

"Those kind of things, you love to hear as negatives about a player, but I saw it as a real positive last night in that he just kept playing. It didn't affect his play in the next series. He had a very good approach and attitude about it and knew he'd made mistakes, but he knew he couldn't harp on them. That was good to see."

Burton scored a touchdown on a diving catch in the end zone, where he kept both feet in bounds and maintained possession.

Linehan concluded, "I think the sky is the limit for those young guys as long as they improve and work hard. They've got the ability to get more and more playing time. At this point, we're just excited about the prospects of them playing and adding some dimensions to our offense that we were looking for. Right now we're just pleased that

they had a good outing and now they've got to show that they can back it up with another one and another one."

BY THE NUMBERS: 5. The number of times the Rams scored 20 or more points in a game in 2007.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I don't know what it is. But we've got to win. There's no question." -- Coach Scott Linehan, when asked the number of wins necessary to remain the team's head coach.
