St. Louis Rams Notes, Quotes 2008-08-05
--Quarterbacks Brock Berlin and Bruce Gradkowski, competing for the No. 3 job, each had about 18 snaps in Saturday's scrimmage.

Said coach Scott Linehan, "You can see their experience. Both of them have a very good demeanor in the huddle. I've seen Brock play a game for us. He played a very gutty performance and was very efficient, I thought, when we played Cincinnati last year in a tough situation. You can really tell the two of them played a lot. You can really tell that Bruce has been playing in the league. You can see those 14 some-odd starts (actually 11), just how he manages things. It's their first go around, they've been working with receivers, you know, they don't know which group's in there and they just go in there, they're having fun doing it, and it's going to be a heck of a battle."

Gradkowski didn't join the team until mid-June after being released by the Buccaneers. Asked if he sees Gradkowski becoming comfortable in the system, Linehan said, "Yeah he is. He is a lot more comfortable. I can see in his play-calling and huddle procedure, play -calling just really is. I'm pretty surprised. It's a new system the verbiage is completely different. That's something I noticed today, he's got a pretty good handle on things.

"He's a very good athlete. That's the one thing coming out of college that was really a big part of what he does and he did it at the pro level. That gives him dimension that is only going to help him."

--Before Saturday's scrimmage, wide receiver Derek Stanley recalled how he felt last year as a seventh-round pick before the first scrimmage of camp.

"It was my first contact, my first like real-live kind of action in the NFL," Stanley said. "It was a little nerve-wracking at first. You didn't know what to expect. How hard the guys hit. You get to the 'League,' and everybody knows all the little tricks and stuff like that."

This year, Stanley is in the mix for a spot among a deep group of receivers. "I'm in a dogfight trying to make this team, so I know that along with making those big catches I've got to show consistency. Always lining up right. Always doing the correct technique and the correct assignment, and always giving 100 percent effort."

--Linebacker Chris Chamberlain, a seventh-round pick, has been getting snaps at weak-side linebacker. He has shown the ability in pass coverage.

"I know the coaches have said good things so far, but I'm not guaranteed anything," Chamberlain said. "I'm definitely looking forward to getting out there and playing some live football. This (practice routine) is sometimes a little unrealistic, tagging off or 'thudding' them up. I'm excited to go out there full speed, fly around, and hope to make some plays."

--Players have been doing their singing at supper, which set the stage for a scene on a recent night. Linebacker David Vobora was called to sing, and not only did he summon defensive end Chris Long, but also Samantha Bloxdorf. She is a student trainer at Concordia University and is helping at camp.

She sat on a chair opposite Vobora and Long as they sang "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." At a key part of the song, they got down and reached their arms out as they sang, "Baby, baby, I get down on my knees for you."

Said Vobora, "I always have fun; you have to. I love football, no matter how hard it is, no matter how sore I am. I love it. And I'm going to have a good time at it.

"Hey, Chris and I, I think we have a pretty big future in show business if this whole football thing doesn't work out, don't you?"
