Settle it down people . . . settle it down!
Some of you have a legitimate right to believe the unexpected. Others? The sky actually won't fall where the pessimists are running for cover. We're here to help play Magic 8 ball and predict which Week 1 trends will continue and which will reverse course.
From Carson Palmer's struggles to Donovan's dominance, people are reacting as if it's Week 14. Let's take a look at 12 things that will either change in the next month or continue on par.
The Michael Turner phenomenon? Continues Brace yourself Hotlanta fans, this kid couldn't be more "for real." His acceleration to the line has long been applauded by teammates in San Diego as well as personnel people throughout the league. He may, however, have to learn how to actually tone it back a bit if he wants to last in this league for more than three years. Man, does this kid run hard. He and Jerious Norwood gives Atlanta a heck of a 1-2 punch and if they can remain healthy, could carve up defenses even more in the second half of the season when defenses are banged up and dragging a bit.
The Donovan McNabb phenomenon? Reverses Donovan, when healthy, is still as dangerous as they come. However, he needs to show us all that he can last 16 games. When I see it, I'll believe it. Hey, that's fair. Plus, they played the Rams last week; they aren't going to rack up 350-plus yards passing each week.
Carson Palmer's struggles? Continues This team needs to get on the same page in so many ways, and having an injured Chad Ocho Cinco, who hasn't done much at all in recent months, and no Chris Henry could make for several awkward weeks for one of the game's most productive passers.
Peyton Manning's struggles? Reverses Regardless of who it is, players need a few weeks to find their rhythm. Once Manning finds his he'll be back to the Manning of old, whether Marvin Harrison returns to Pro Bowl form or not. Even if he struggles again this week, have no fear, Indy faithful. Manning will return to scaring the heck out of defensive coordinators.
Redskins mediocrity? Continues The offense doesn't do much to frighten a defense and with Jason Taylor struggling with an injured knee, the defense doesn't exactly strike fear either. But that's not really the issue here. The Redskins play like a franchise sorely lacking something, something I can't quite put my finger on. There's just something missing there.
Matt Forte's production? Continues ... for a while The kid is big, strong, fast and right now hasn't gotten the memo that he's just a rookie. Much of the Bears draft was built around ensuring they grabbed the productive college back. For a while he'll be able to put up numbers. The key is how he reacts when the bricks and mortar of that rookie wall starts to harden later in the year.
Seattle's slide? Reverses This team is simply way too loaded talent-wise to be as bad as they played last week. Folks love to put it on Mike Holmgren being a lame-duck coach but that's simply throwing a theory against the wall. It won't stick. He still has the ear of his team and, again, personnel is too good for this.
Detroit's demise? Continues How they could be this bad with that many offensive weapons and football's best young up-and-coming offensive player in Calvin Johnson simply shows some things just don't change. There's already frustration in Motown and they better do something to reverse it fast. Mike Martz isn't there to blame anymore.
Steelers sizzling? Continues Big Ben is better, the receivers are better, the running back unit is better and their defense is still as electric as it was a year ago. Now that Tom Brady and Shawne Merriman are hurt, the Steelers should be licking their chops.
