PLAYER NOTES
--CB Tye Hill's season is over. Hill was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury that occurred in the fourth game of the season. Hill missed nine games in 2007 because of injury, so he has now played just 12 games out of 32 in the past two seasons.
--CB Quincy Butler was assigned on waivers from the Dallas Cowboys. Butler was originally an undrafted free agent that signed with Dallas in 2006. He was also on the Saints' practice squad this season. Butler is 6-1, 190.
--PK Josh Brown tweaked his groin in practice last Thursday and felt some tightness during Sunday's game against Arizona. Brown won't kick much in practice this week, but should be fine for Sunday's game against Seattle, his previous team.
--CB Fakhir Brown suffered a twisted ankle in Sunday's game against the Cardinals, but is expected to be fine for Sunday's game against Seattle.
--LB Gary Stills was undergoing an MRI on his knee after being injured against Arizona.
--RT Alex Barron, who did not start against Arizona after being late for a team meeting last Friday, will be back in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
--P Donnie Jones is leading the NFL with a 49.9-yard average, a figure that if it stands up would be the second-highest season average of all time.
REPORT CARD VS. CARDINALS
PASSING OFFENSE: C-plus - QB Marc Bulger managed the game better, and even though he threw an interception that was returned 99 yards for a touchdown, it was clear there was defensive holding on the play. Bulger was sacked just once, but in the first half, he passed for just 17 yards. In the second half, in come-from-behind mode, he passed for 201 yards. Rookie WR Donnie Avery continues to struggle to get open and be where Bulger expects. Avery had just two catches for 18 yards.
RUSHING OFFENSE: C-minus -- RB Steven Jackson ran hard but also fumbled twice, one of which was returned for a touchdown. His first fumble came at the Arizona 21-yard line when a touchdown could have made it a one-score game.
PASS DEFENSE: C-minus -- Yes, QB Kurt Warner passed for just 279 yards, but 227 came in the first half as the Cardinals scored on their first possessions and took a 20-7 halftime lead. Arizona ran just 20 plays in the second half.
RUSH DEFENSE: B -- Arizona running backs totaled just 65 yards on 20 carries and 16 came on a run by J.J. Arrington. The Rams held their gaps better and didn't give the big plays they did in the first game between the teams.
SPECIAL TEAMS: C -- The only reason for this grade is the 42-yard missed field goal by PK John Brown. Brown did hit a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter, but that made the score 27-10. Otherwise, special teams play was solid. Derek Stanley averaged 23.8 yards on six kickoff returns and a 33-yard punt return. Coverage was solid, although Arizona had just three kickoff returns and one punt return.
COACHING: C -- With a team playing this poorly, it's difficult to get a handle on the coaching. The team plays hard, but mistakes doom them. They did have just one penalty assessed in the game, and on offense, there was an attempted wide receiver pass by Dane Looker that was incomplete and a run by Steven Jackson on a direct snap that gained just two yards.
