St. Louis Rams Strategy and Personnel 2008-11-07
The Rams officially placed WRs Drew Bennett and Dante Hall on injured reserve, ending their seasons. LB David Vobora was signed from the practice squad.

The Rams also added WR Matt Caddell, RB Darius Walker and LB Kelly Poppinga to the practice squad. Caddell was with the Rams in training camp, and was recently released from the practice squad. Walker has been with the Texans, but was waived Oct. 25 after also spending some time on their practice squad this season. Poppinga was released by the Dolphins in the final cut. Released from the Rams' practice squad were S David Roach and FB Russ Weil.

PLAYER NOTES

--RB Steven Jackson did not practice again Thursday and acknowledged it would take something "miraculous" for him to feel good enough to be full speed in practice Friday. Coach Jim Haslett reiterated that Jackson has to have that kind of practice to be able to play.

--RB Antonio Pittman worked on the side Thursday, and might get some practice time Friday. He has not been ruled out from playing Sunday against the Jets.

--TE Daniel Fells hobbled off the field Thursday and had his foot worked on, but returned and didn't appear to have further problems.

--C Brett Romberg is getting some work in practice in the event starter Nick Leckey needs a break from battling Jets NT Kris Jenkins.

--WR Derek Stanley did more work Thursday than Wednesday, and his ankle is not expected to be an issue Sunday against the Jets.

--CB Tye Hill had fluid drained from his knee Sunday and was inactive for the game against Arizona. Hill did not practice Wednesday and is not expected to play this week. He is scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., next week for a second opinion.

--RB Travis Minor, who suffered a concussion Sunday against Arizona, failed a neuropsych test Tuesday and did not practice Wednesday. Minor will have another test, and if he passes could be available on an emergency basis against the Jets.

--DE Eric Moore suffered a strained neck against Arizona and did not practice Wednesday. There is still a chance he could be available to play this week against the Jets.

GAME PLAN: Somehow, the Rams have to be able to establish a running game if Steven Jackson and Antonio Pittman aren't available. If they can, the passing game could open up, and big plays could be available to wide receiver Donnie Avery.

Defensively, aside from limiting big plays by quarterback Brett Favre, the Rams have to stop the running of Thomas Jones.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Rams interior OL vs. Jets NT Kris Jenkins -- C Nick Leckey will have his hands full with Jenkins, who has been dominating in the first eight games of the season. Gs Jacob Bell and Richie Incognito will have to provide help. Jenkins usually lines up over a guard on passing downs.

Rams secondary vs. Jets QB Brett Favre: Favre is tied for third in the NFL in touchdown passes but leads the league with 12 interceptions. He has completed 68.4 percent of his passes, so coming up with interceptions will be important if the Rams want to win this matchup. FS Oshiomogho Atogwe will have to do a good job of reading where Favre is going with the ball, while CBs Ron Bartell and Fakhir Brown will have to limit the big plays from WRs Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery.

INJURY IMPACT: With WR/KR Derek Stanley somewhat limited by an ankle injury, WR Donnie Avery and CB Jonathan worked on kickoff returns in practice Wednesday. ... RBs Steven Jackson and Antonio Pittman questionable for Sunday's game against the Jets. RB Kenneth Darby participated in his 10th practice with the team Wednesday and could start Sunday, while Samkon Gado practiced for the first time after signing Tuesday.
