--OG Mark Setterstrom (injured/knee) was placed on waivers, and is likely to end of on injured reserve. The Rams needed to make the move to clear a roster spot for RB Steven Jackson. Setterstrom suffered what was called a fractured patella in his left knee against San Diego Saturday night. He suffered a torn ACL in his left knee last season in the third game of the season.
--WR Torry Holt was limited in practice and did not play against San Diego because of tightness in his back.
--WR Donnie Avery returned to practice after missing two weeks because of a small crack in his pelvic bone. As a precaution, Avery did not play against San Diego, but he is expected to make his NFL debut Saturday against Baltimore.
--C Brett Romberg did not play against San Diego because of a fractured bone in his hand. Romberg played the week before with the injury but did not practice the entire week before the game against the Chargers.
--CB Justin King is seeking a second opinion for his toe injury. After King was injured against Tennessee on Aug. 9, it was said he would need surgery to repair torn ligaments in his toe. He had been scheduled for surgery Aug. 15. King remains on the roster and has not been placed on injured reserve.
--OT Brandon Gorin, who injured his shoulder Aug. 9 against Tennessee, will now undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Nick Leckey vs. Brett Romberg at center -- When camp opened, Romberg was competing with Richie Incognito. However, Incognito was moved to right guard when Mark Setterstrom injured his knee early in camp. Then, Romberg broke a bone in his right hand, and Leckey began taking reps with the first unit. He played well in practices against Tennessee and started Saturday night against San Diego.
"He's played good," coach Scott Linehan said. "When we played down there in Tennessee, those two days, he really played good. They have good, physical tackles, and he blocked the heck out of them."
Said Leckey, "Every day you go out - even when I was (with) the 'threes' and 'twos' - in your mind, you go, 'OK, you've got to think of yourself as a 'one.' After you think about it, you're already focused and you're already prepared. So when an injury and such happens, you're ready to jump in."
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Chris Draft vs. Quinton Culberson at strong-side linebacker -- Draft was back with the first unit in practice, but Linehan insisted Draft and Culberson will both play a lot this season, depending on situations, matchups or the team the Rams are playing. "The way I look at it, we have four starting linebackers," Linehan said.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: TE Randy McMichael - Offensive coordinator Al Saunders has made it a priority to have McMichael involved in the passing game following a season in which he had to be used often as a blocker in pass protection. After not having any catches in the first preseason game, McMichael had three receptions over the middle for 54 yards.
QB Marc Bulger is enthused about the way Saunders is incorporating McMichael into the offense. "I think we'll be able to use him more," Bulger said. "The first interception, I was a little juiced up and put too much on it. He is good with that, he can get down the middle of the field. He is also a great blocker and he moves well. We don't want to show too much, but I think he is going to have a great year. He had all those catches in Miami and I think he'll get back to that form."
ROOKIE REPORT: CB Justin King is seeking a second opinion for his toe injury. After being injured against Tennessee on Aug. 9, it was said King would need surgery to repair torn ligaments in his toe. He had been scheduled for surgery Aug. 15. King remains on the roster and has not been placed on injured reserve. ... WR Donnie Avery has lost a lot of practice time because of a pelvic bone injury ... DE Chris Long is starting, but James Hall is also getting a lot of snaps with the first unit at right end.
INJURY REPORT: Exactly one year after OG Richie Incognito suffered an ankle injury against the Chargers in the second preseason game, OG Mark Setterstrom went down with what coach Scott Linehan called a fractured patella. "That looks like something that will be season ending," Linehan said. "They still have to look at it. It couldn't have been good. I know he was in extreme pain." Setterstrom was playing left guard at the time of the injury in the third quarter and was replaced by rookie Roy Schuening.
--RB Brian Leonard (shoulder), LB David Vobora (ankle) and FB Russ Weil (ankle) were also injured in the game. Weil was on crutches after the game. Leonard could have come back and played if it was in the regular season.
--WRs Torry Holt (back) and Donnie Avery (pelvic bone) were game-time decisions, and did not play. Dante Hall started in Holt's place.
--C Brett Romberg (hand) did not play. Nick Leckey started, and also played with the second unit in the second half before giving way to Donovan Raiola late in the game.
--CB Fakhir Brown (shoulder), S Oshiomogho Atogwe (hamstring) and TE Anthony Becht (hamstring) are still out with injuries suffered in the first week of training camp.
