St. Louis Rams Notes, Quotes 2009-02-03
--Kevin Demoff has been hired as vice president of football operations and chief operating officer, essentially giving him power of authority just under the ownership. Demoff, the son of agent Marvin Demoff, comes over from Tampa Bay, where he served as a senior assistant to the general manager for the past three years. Previous to the Bucs, Kevin Demoff was the director of football operations for the AFL's Los Angeles Avengers for four years.

With the Rams, he'll handle all contract negotiations.

--New coach Steve Spagnuolo has continued to add to his coaching staff.

Spagnuolo has hired Dick Curl as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, Charlie Baggett as receivers coach, Frank Leonard as an offensive assistant, Paul Ferraro as a defensive coach and Andre Curtis as a defensive assistant.

In addition, offensive line coach Steve Loney was retained by Spagnuolo.

Curl was last with the Chiefs, Baggett was at the University of Washington and was last in the NFL with the Dolphins in 2006, Leonard was at Kansas State, Ferraro was Minnesota's special teams coordinator last season and Curtis was the Giants' defensive quality control coach. Ferraro is expected to coach the Rams' linebackers.

Spagnuolo interviewed Rock Gullickson as a potential replacement for strength and conditioning coach Dana LeDuc, who was retained. Gullickson was with the Packers last season.

Former Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom was hired as the running backs coach.

Spagnuolo still needs to hire a tight ends coach, defensive line coach, secondary coach and special teams coordinator.

--LB Quinton Culberson and QB Brock Berlin, each scheduled to become exclusive rights free agents on Feb. 27, were re-signed to one-year contracts.

--Mike Williams, who has been San Francisco's assistant director of pro personnel since 2005, was hired by Rams general manager Billy Devaney as director of pro personnel. This will be the first time the Rams have had someone in that position since 2000.

--Bruce Warwick, who most recently was assistant athletics director for football operations at the University of Tennessee was hired as assistant to the head coach/football operations.

--Pat Shurmur was hired as offensive coordinator and Ken Flajole as defensive coordinator.

Shurmur was an assistant with the Eagles since 1999, and spent the last seven seasons as quarterbacks coach. His uncle, Fritz Shurmur, was a Rams assistant and defensive coordinator from 1982-90.

Flajole has been Carolina's linebackers coach since 2003. He and Spagnuolo don't have a coaching connection, but Flajole and Eagles coach Andy Reid were assistants together at the University of Missouri from 1989-91.

--General manager Bill Devaney and Spagnuolo have connections from earlier in their careers.

Devaney was a scout with Washington in 1983 when Spagnuolo was getting his feet wet as an intern in the player personnel department.

Ten years later, Spagnuolo was with the Chargers as a scout when Devaney was the club's player personnel director.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "St. Louis has treated me well, giving me the opportunity to play and I am always going to be appreciative of that. Whatever happens, that is in God's hands and I am not really fretting over it. I feel like I am going to be where I'm supposed to be this next year." -- FS Oshiomogho Atogwe, commenting on his impending free agency. Atogwe is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent Feb. 27.
