St. Louis Rams Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30
--CB Tye Hill, who had problems with confidence early in the season and then injured his knee, is back after missing three games. While he will be the fifth corner if he's active, his presence might be necessary because of the amount of times the Cardinals pass. Arizona has averaged over 40 passing plays per game.

Asked about Hill's play early in the season, coach Jim Haslett said, "He wasn't playing as good as he could play. He's played a lot better earlier in his career, but Tye's got great speed, great leaping ability and he's a good player. In his first two years he played really well, so I expect him to come back and compete at that level again, try to fight for his job again."

Of his top three corners Ron Bartell, Fakhir Brown and Jason Craft, Haslett said, "Well, I think Ron is playing at a high level on the outside and I'm glad for him and having Fakhir back and Jason's a good inside guy, good nickel, so yeah, I think they're playing pretty well."

--The disappearance of WR Torry Holt continues. While coach Jim Haslett makes sure to point out that Holt leads the team in receptions, the reality is he has just 26, a total that would project to 59 for the season. After his rookie season in 1999, when Holt had 52 catches, the lowest he has had since then is 81. He had 93 last season.

In addition, he has just 289 yards for an 11.1-yard average. That would also be the lowest of his career. He has one touchdown of 45 yards, and his other 25 catches have averaged just 9.8 yards.

Haslett and quarterback Marc Bulger say consistent double teams have made it difficult for Holt to get the ball.

Said Haslett, "I guess it's all based on the coverage and what they're trying to do to be honest with you. Torry got a lot of two-mans last week. When you have two guys running with you, it's hard to get open."

Said Bulger, "Every wide receiver is open according to them but he has built up such a reputation that a lot of teams roll to him. When you have Torry and a rookie, sometimes you can get that one-on-one coverage with the rookie and they will double Torry.

"Hopefully, Donnie (Avery) will start to get that attention and we will get singled up on Torry and he will take advantage. Once we get those guys going then we will get cover two and we will run the ball."

--Haslett on the play of the offensive line against New England: "Not as good as we have done in the past. I think we could have done a better job but you have to look at the team we played against. Their front three guys are good football players. Three first-round draft picks that have played a lot of ball and Richard (Seymour) is as good as it is going to get up front. We did not do as good as we would have liked. We threw for a lot of yards, we had 300 yards throwing, but I thought we could have done better."

BY THE NUMBERS: 4-15 -- The Rams' record against the NFC West beginning with the 2005 season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I just like the opportunity. I'm glad we're having the opportunity to play some of teams in our division and I think the next five or six weeks will tell us where we're going to be. I told you at the beginning, when I took over, that we'll try to do whatever we have to do to win games. If it's going for it on fourth-and-1s, doing an onside kick, whatever we feel like we have to do to win a game. We'll do whatever we have to do. That kind of holds true the rest of the year, so we'll see what happens." -- Coach Jim Haslett on this week's game against Arizona, the first of five division games for the Rams in the final nine weeks of the season.
