St. Louis Rams Notes, Quotes 2009-04-18
--Coach Steve Spagnuolo was recently asked to finish this sentence: The Rams will have a successful draft if ...

He said, smiling, "(General manager) Billy (Devaney) makes all the right picks." He then said, more seriously, "No, if we can come away with some quality, character football players. I think it's a deep enough draft that there's going to be players throughout all of those rounds. So if we come away from it feeling that we completed (the roster) and we've got character players, I'll feel good about it."

--The Rams are expecting improvement from DE Chris Long, who was solid but not spectacular in his rookie year.

Asked about Long, Spagnuolo said, "I tell you what, a tremendous guy. A tremendous person. I felt that way when he was coming out a year ago. Just the research we did on him. I'm looking forward to working with him. He's a high-energy guy, and you get a lot of high-energy guys in there, that's what the game of football's all about."

--The Rams were one of five teams that put in a claim for former University of Missouri wide receiver Will Franklin, who was placed on waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs April 13. A fourth-round pick in 2008, Franklin played in 13 games, starting one, and had seven receptions for 83 yards.

The Rams had second priority in the claim process, but lost out to the Lions, who have first claim to any waived players. Also putting in claims were Indianapolis, Oakland and Philadelphia.

--The Rams will open the 2009 season with road games at Seattle and Washington. They are one of only two teams - Minnesota is the other - that have two away games to start the season.

It is third time this decade the team has had two road games to start the season. The other times were in 2001 and 2005. The Rams do have a stretch of three straight home games later in the season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We'll try to identify those leaders on our team, and hopefully, they'll step to the forefront in those tough times that you know you're going to have -- no matter what team -- in a 16-game season. I remember vividly going through it in Philadelphia. And I remember Brian Dawkins and Jeremiah Trotter, Donovan McNabb at a certain point in the season deciding that, 'Hey guys.' ... They did little things with the other players. Very unseen things, but it made a big difference. I believe that the underlying leaders surface once there's no leadership in front of them. Hopefully, there's some undiscovered secret leaders on this roster right now." -- Coach Steve Spagnuolo on how leaders will emerge on a roster that has lost several veterans.
