St. Louis Rams Notes, Quotes 2009-04-03
--Around the league, unsigned players with franchise tags routinely stay away from their teams' offseason activities, whether it be the conditioning program, OTAs or minicamps.

The fact that free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe has been present since the program started March 16 and is participating in this weekend's voluntary minicamp hasn't been lost on coach Steve Spagnuolo.

"It says a great deal," Spagnuolo said. "It says a lot about the character of the person and I've already conveyed that to those guys. I think it's a great thing."

Atogwe received the franchise tender of $6.342 million in February, the team remains hopeful they will be able to sign him to a long-term contract.

--Coach Steve Spagnuolo wants to be able to take his team away from the Russell Training Facility for training camp, but he doesn't want it to be too far from St. Louis.

The Rams camped in Macomb, Ill. (about 160 miles away) for nine summers before training at home for three years from 2005-2007. Last year, they trained in Wisconsin, which already has been ruled out as a potential site.

Being investigated are Lindenwood University, which is a short drive from the team's headquarters, but isn't believed to have the facilities to handle an NFL teams; Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Southern Illinois-Carbondale.

The Edwardsville campus is about 40 minutes away, while Carbondale is around two hours. It is possible the decision will be made to have camp at the team facility.

--There are some new opponents on the Rams' preseason schedule this year.

The league announced each team's opponents, but most of the dates and times will be revealed in the next month.

Full preseason weekends this year are Aug. 13-17, Aug. 20-24, Aug. 27-31 and September 3-4. The Rams will be home against Atlanta in the second week and will play the annual Governor's Cup against Kansas City on Thursday, Sept. 3. On the road, the Rams will play the Jets in the first week and Cincinnati in Week 3. The game against the Bengals is set for Thursday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 Central time.

This will be the first time the Rams have played the Jets in the preseason and previously they have played the Bengals and Falcons just once.

--A song written by Rams owner Chip Rosenbloom is getting play on country radio stations. Rosenbloom has a career as a movie producer, and he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he's been writing songs "since I was a kid."

He said Dayna Lang has recorded several of his songs, including two he wrote with Lauren Christy. Ten songs are on Layne's CD, "Anything You Want." The single that is airing is titled, "I'll Keep Believing."

Said Rosenbloom of the songs, "I thought they were rock 'n roll, and they are popular songs. They turned out to be country because I think when you add a fiddle and a steel guitar it becomes country."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We all think we're ready before we are. I'm not so sure anybody's 100 percent ready until you get in the middle of it and do it. It's like the first time you're trying to ride that bike. Until you jump on there and do it, your mom or dad let's you go, how do you really know if you're ready to do it? You take the training wheels off and go. But there's got to be some confidence involved. I'm hoping it was time. We'll find out a couple years from now." -- Coach Steve Spagnuolo when asked when an assistant coach is ready to be a head coach.
