St. Louis Rams Inside Slant 2008-12-17
It seems like a long time ago when the Rams beat the Seahawks three times during the 2004 season, including one in the playoffs.

Since then, Seattle's domination of the series has coincided with the Rams' demise into a team that has won just five of 30 games over the past two seasons.

The Seahawks' come-from-behind 23-20 victory Sunday over the Rams was the eighth consecutive win for Seattle in the series. The loss gave the Rams a 4-19 record in division games since the start of the 2005 season, and it is even worse at home.

The Rams' only division win at home since 2005 came over the 49ers in 2006, making them 1-10 in that time frame with San Francisco coming to St. Louis next Sunday.

The Rams led 17-7 at halftime and were still clinging to a 20-13 lead in the fourth quarter when two big plays doomed the Rams. A 37-yard pass to Bobby Engram set up the tying touchdown and a subsequent 45-yard play to Deion Branch led to the winning field goal as time expired.

Said wide receiver Dane Looker, "It's a helpless feeling to see three seconds on the clock -- and they're in field-goal position. To lose that way is very tough. Especially at home, and to the Seahawks."

Added linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, "An opponent that I don't like very much. An opponent that we had down for most of the game. To lose to them at the end is very tough."

Said wide receiver Torry Holt, "When we're up, we've got to learn to punish teams or finish teams. They definitely were due to be finished, and we didn't do that."

In the first half, Seattle scored its only touchdown on a fumble return. Late in the half, the Rams squandered an opportunity when tight end Joe Klopfenstein lost a fumble after getting a first down at the Seahawks' 15-yard line.

Said coach Jim Haslett, "If nothing else this team is going to learn quickly in the future that when you have a chance to put a team away early in the game, that those turnovers are going to come back and get you sooner or later. You have a chance to really take care of it in the first half and you don't do it. If nothing else, hopefully this team will learn that that is the most important thing in the game."

After a stretch when they were blown out of games in the first half, the Rams have settled down and been competitive. The defense has allowed just four touchdowns in the past three games. However, to quarterback Marc Bulger, a loss is a loss.

"If you don't win, then you feel the same if you lost by 30 or you lose by a last-second field goal," he said. "They're all bad and it's become routine."
