The Rams offense continues to struggle, and even with running back Steven Jackson back on the field, points are at a premium.
In Sunday's 34-10 loss to Arizona, Jackson fumbled twice, once when the Rams had moved to the Cardinals' 21-yard line, and then deep in his own territory, with the fumble being returned for a touchdown.
The offense has moved the ball better the last two games, and had two possessions with eight plays against Arizona and three with nine. But the result hasn't been points. Fourteen of Arizona's points came on fumble and interceptions returns for touchdowns.
Asked about moving the ball, but failing to score, quarterback Marc Bulger said, "Well, that's kind of why we're in the situation we're in. Good teams find a way to overcome that. When the defense puts us in a bad spot, we need to cover them. When we put the defense in a bad spot, they have to cover us. We're not doing that for each other and that's why we have two wins."
The Rams lost the turnover battle again with three to Arizona's one, and for the season, the Rams are minus-11 in turnover ratio.
Said defensive end Leonard Little, "We can't shoot ourselves in the foot. We had a couple of chances to keep ourselves in the game and possibly win the game. But we're not that good to make those kinds of mistakes and try to come back from them. We made a couple mistakes early. We can't make mistakes like that against a good team."
Bulger added, "We can't make mistakes. I think we're a good team, but we're two-and-whatever. We have to almost play a mistake-free game to win."
Coach Jim Haslett lamented the turnovers as well as a missed 42-yard field goal by kicker Josh Brown in the second quarter that would have slashed Arizona's lead to 17-10. The miss came after the Rams had moved from their own 24-yard line to the Cardinals' 24.
Said Haslett, "The defense after the first drive played just about as good as we can play. We held them on defense to 20 points, which is way below their average. Again the thing that disappointed me was the turnovers and the missed field goal. That disappointed me more than anything."
As for his fumbles, Jackson said, "I was trying to make things happen. But that's still Football 101 for running backs: protect the ball. I was fighting for extra yards and the ball slipped out. There's really no excuse."
