A Rams team desperate for good news on any front got some Tuesday when it was learned that Richie Incognito's shoulder checked out OK.
Incognito left in the first half of the San Francisco game feeling pain in his shoulder; there was concern that he might have rotator cuff issues. But an MRI exam Monday evening revealed no damage. Incognito reported good strength in the shoulder and will be back in the starting lineup Sunday at right guard against the visiting Chicago Bears .
"He's ready to go," coach Jim Haslett said Tuesday.
It's not as if the Rams' offensive line has distinguished itself this season, but Incognito and Orlando Pace clearly have been the team's most consistent blockers. The prospect of losing both for an extended period of time would have been a further blow in what already is a dismal 2-8 season.
Pace will be out two to four weeks with ligament damage in his right knee.
After losing two starters to injury during training camp and the preseason, the offensive line had been pretty stable up to this point.
Brett Romberg suffered a broken hand that sidelined him for several weeks in August, ultimately costing him the starting center job to Nick Leckey. Mark Setterstrom opened camp as the starting right guard ahead of Incognito. But a fractured left kneecap in the Aug. 16 preseason game against San Diego ended Setterstrom's season and could be career-threatening.
But once the regular season began, the Rams' five line starters had missed a total of only three games until now. Left guard Jacob Bell missed games against the New York Giants and Seattle with a hamstring injury. Pace sat out the Dallas game with a thigh injury.
In each of those three games, Adam Goldberg stepped into the starting lineup off the bench. Goldberg is poised to do the same thing this time around at left tackle for as long as Pace is sidelined.
"That's what I'm here to do, right?" Goldberg said. "I've just got to fill in, execute the offense and play ball. There's not much you can say."
Goldberg, 6-7, 318 pounds, has been a valuable utility man for the Rams since being acquired Sept. 3, 2006 for a seventh-round draft pick. He started twice at right tackle last season before being placed on injured reserve in early October with a knee injury. In '06, he started once at left guard and once at left tackle.
This summer, Goldberg got extensive work at left tackle during training camp and the preseason while Pace was working his way back from shoulder surgery. So he's comfortable at the position.
"I hope Big O gets healthy as fast as possible, and in the meantime, I'm prepared to fill in as best I can," Goldberg said. "He's a great player and a great man. He's got a great support system, great family. So Orlando's got a lot of things going for him. I wish him a speedy recovery, and he'll be back."
In the meantime, Haslett has full confidence that Goldberg can get it done at left tackle.
"The thing I like about him, he's tough, nasty, and physical," Haslett said. "I like his demeanor when he comes on the field. He's got a little swagger about him. He'll do a good job of holding up."
To shore up their depth, the Rams signed tackle-guard Anthony Davis to their active roster Tuesday. Davis, 6-4, 322, is a five-year NFL veteran who started 32 games at left tackle for Tampa Bay over the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He saw action in four games this season, mainly on special teams, before being released in late October.
"With Orlando being out a couple of weeks, we just needed some insurance," said Billy Devaney, the Rams' executive vice president for player personnel.
Davis probably won't be up to speed in time to suit up for Sunday's game with Chicago, but the Rams plan to have rookie John Greco on the game-day roster to back up at tackle and guard. To make room for Davis on the roster, the Rams released running back Samkon Gado.
