Several Falcons players are in position to lead the NFL in a statistical category heading into the final week of the regular season. Here's a look at the races:
Rushing
Michael Turner is the NFL's No. 2 rusher, trailing Adrian Peterson by 166 yards. That might seem like too many yards to make up in one game. Consider this, however: Turner will be playing indoors this week against St. Louis, ranked No. 28 in the league in run defense and allowing 147.5 yards a game. Turner does have a 220-yard performance this season. Peterson will be at home but faces the New York Giants, ranked No. 9 against the run, allowing 94.9 yards per game. The Falcons limited Peterson to 76 yards last week.
LEADERS
1.....Adrian Peterson, Vikings ..1,657
2.....Michael Turner, Falcons....1,491
3.....Clinton Portis, Redskins ..1,407
Receiving
Roddy White is No. 2 in the NFL in receiving yards, trailing Andre Johnson by 93. St. Louis is better against the pass than the run, but not by much. The Rams rank No. 23 in the league against the pass, allowing 221.4 yards a game. White has a total of 85 yards in the past two games, including 24 last week. He does, however, have seven 100-yard games this season. Johnson might have it a little easier, playing this week at home against Chicago. The Bears are ranked No. 28 in the NFL against the pass, allowing 235.4 yards per game.
LEADERS
1.....Andre Johnson, Texans......1,427
2.....Roddy White, Falcons ......1,334
3.....Larry Fitzgerald, Cards....1,301
Touchdowns
Michael Turner already owns the Falcons' single-season touchdown record, but he trails DeAngelo Williams by four touchdowns. Turner might play long enough against St. Louis to score four times with a first-round bye at stake. He does have one four-touchdown game this season. Williams also will be playing for that No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs as Carolina faces New Orleans, ranked No. 18 in the NFL in total defense. Williams has scored at least one touchdown in the past nine games, including two four-touchdown games.
LEADERS
1.....DeAngelo Williams, Panthers 20
2.....Michael Turner, Falcons ....16
3.....Three players tied..........15
Sacks
John Abraham set the Falcons' single-season sack record last week but trails DeMarcus Ware by 3.5 sacks. Abraham will probably move from the right side as to not match up with tackle Orlando Pace. The Rams are No. 6 in sacks allowed, surrendering 42 this season. Abraham, perhaps playing with a chip on his shoulder for not making the Pro Bowl, has three three-sack games this season. Dallas is playing for its playoff life. Jacksonville is just behind St. Louis, ranking No. 7 in the league in sacks allowed with a total of 41.
LEADERS
1.....DeMarcus Ware, Cowboys....20.0
2.....Joey Porter, Dolphins ....17.5
3.....John Abraham, Falcons ....16.5
