Dallas Cowboys' Terence Newman, Patrick Crayton have surgery
Jan. 7-- Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman and receiver Patrick Crayton had arthroscopic ankle surgeries Tuesday to remove bone spurs.

Also, receiver/kick returner Isaiah Stanback had shoulder surgery last week.

Newman battled a groin/abdominal injury this season that forced him to have sports hernia surgery on Oct. 10 and missed five consecutive games in the middle of the season.

Still, Newman returned for the final seven games and had a team-high four interceptions. Newman was slowed by the injured ankle in the regular-season finale loss at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Crayton had 39 receptions for 550 yards and four touchdowns. He also averaged 9.5 yards on 15 punt returns with a long of 33 yards.

Stanback suffered a dislocated shoulder during preseason but elected to wait until after the season to have surgery. He was placed on injured reserve in the final week of the regular season. It's also the same left shoulder that required surgery last year.

Sherman watch

Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman is one of eight candidates vying to fill the St. Louis Rams' head coaching vacancy.

Sherman is expected to interview soon. Former Cowboys assistant and current Miami assistant Todd Bowles is also in the mix.

Sherman is a highly regarded coach across the league. He was an offensive coordinator in Minnesota (1999) and Pittsburgh (1998). He's been in the NFL since 1988.

The Rams finished 2-14 last season, but they have star running back Steven Jackson and the No. 2 overall pick in the April draft.

Crosslin signs

The Cowboys signed fullback Julius Crosslin on Tuesday.

Crosslin spent the entire 2008 season on the team's practice squad. Crosslin signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie last season out of Oklahoma State.

More honors

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and linebacker DeMarcus Ware were among 10 players voted by former players as NFL Alumni 2008 Player of the Year honorees.

Former pros voted only for the positions they once played. The players will be honored at the 27th annual Player of the Year Awards Dinner, to be held Jan. 30 at the Hyatt Regency Tampa in Tampa, Fla.
