I think it was Albert Camus who so eloquently once diminished the importance of preparation thusly: “Practice?! Practice?! We’re talking about practice?!” But practice is important, and we’re at the point in training camp where it’s laying hurt upon its masses. That’s no excuse to get lax, according to Scott Linehan, who is stressing this training camp the importance of continuing to push through pain and discomfort.
Linehan has never been known for strenuous camps, and last year being unprepared in July and August might have caught up with the team, as injuries mounted through the season. So it makes sense that, in addition to implementing new drills aimed at lessening injuries, Linehan is pushing his team past their comfort zone in order to get them in better shape and push their thresholds a little bit higher.
Of course, the opposite could happen — being stricter might overexhaust the team now, leading them to wear out sometime in, say, late October. Or maybe it’ll work.
Who knows, really? In the end, like everything, it’ll come down to luck. And it’s hard to imagine Linehan and the Rams having worse luck than last year’s.
